A Garage Door Company Quoted Thousands. The Real Fix Cost Less Than $25

A Central Arkansas homeowner recently called DG Door Service for a second opinion.

The timing made the call especially interesting.

Another garage door company was still at the customer’s home when they contacted us.

The homeowner had been told that their garage door system had suffered a major failure. According to the quote they received, they needed a new garage door opener costing approximately $1,500, plus an entirely new garage door costing even more.

Before agreeing to spend several thousand dollars, the homeowner called DG Door Service.

What we saw told a very different story.

What Had Actually Broken?

Ruby asked the homeowner to send clear photos of the garage door, the opener, the springs, the top section of the door, and the area where the opener arm connected to the door.

A traditional overhead garage door opener uses a metal arm, often called the J arm, to connect the opener trolley to the garage door. When the opener runs, the arm pushes or pulls the door as it opens and closes.

That arm must be securely attached to the top section of the garage door.

In this case, the small attachment bracket had pulled out of the top panel. The opener arm was still attached to the bracket, but the bracket was no longer attached to the door. It had left a small torn area in the metal panel. The company that was on site, simply said the opener was too strong! Now we have heard of not strong enough, but never seen or heard of too strong.

It certainly looked alarming to the homeowner.

However, based on the photographs, it did not appear that the entire garage door and opener had suddenly become useless.

The door was relatively new. The springs appeared to be in good condition. There was no obvious reason in the photographs to immediately recommend replacing the complete door and opener. Customer reported That the door was not heavy to lift which indicated the springs were in decent condition.

The visible problem was concentrated around the opener attachment point.

The Missing Reinforcement

Many garage door opener kits include a small door bracket for connecting the opener arm to the garage door.

The problem is that a garage door opener repeatedly places force on that attachment point. If the top section is not properly reinforced, the small bracket can pull through the thin metal skin of the door.

This is especially likely when the door is heavy, poorly balanced, improperly reinforced, or being forced to move by the opener.

A properly balanced garage door should be supported primarily by its spring system. The opener should guide the door through its travel. It should not be forced to lift the full weight of the door by pulling on one small piece of metal.

One common solution is an operator reinforcement bracket, frequently called an ORB.

Instead of concentrating the opener’s force on a tiny bracket, an operator reinforcement bracket spreads that force across a much larger area of the garage door’s top section.

Garage door manufacturers also emphasize that the top section of a door must be properly reinforced where an automatic opener is attached.

From Thousands of Dollars to a Much Simpler Repair

After reviewing the homeowner’s photographs, Ruby explained that the visible failure appeared to involve the opener attachment and top section reinforcement.

We could not perform a complete inspection over the phone, and photographs cannot reveal every possible problem. However, the visible damage did not justify immediately jumping to a complete door and opener replacement without further evaluation. Although multiple years of experience have taught us a few lessons including the failure of the small included bracket that comes with openers.

Ruby sent the homeowner photos of the type of operator reinforcement bracket commonly used for this situation. We helped them locate the correct style of bracket and provided information showing how the opener arm connects to it.

The bracket itself was available for less than $25.

That is a massive difference from replacing an entire garage door and opener.

We did not visit the property.

We did not sell them an opener, a garage door, a service package, or a pile of unnecessary parts.

We simply helped a Central Arkansas homeowner understand what they were looking at before they agreed to spend thousands of dollars.

Sometimes the honest answer is not the most profitable answer. It is still the right answer.

Does a Higher Price Mean Better Garage Door Service?

There is nothing wrong with a garage door company making a profit.

We must charge enough to operate responsibly and continue helping customers.

However, there is a difference between earning a reasonable profit and turning every service call into the most expensive possible sale.

A higher price does not automatically mean a company is dishonest. Large franchise operations may have franchise fees, large advertising budgets, call centers, management layers, and other overhead expenses that smaller companies do not have.

Those expenses can affect what the customer pays.

But a higher price also does not automatically mean the customer is receiving better workmanship, better parts, more experience, or more honest advice.

Sometimes the customer is simply paying for a nationally recognized name on the side of the service vehicle.

At DG Door Service, our goal is to price our work fairly.

We are not interested in being the cheapest garage door company in Central Arkansas. Being suspiciously cheap often means something important is being skipped.

We are also not interested in sending prices into outer space just because a customer does not know what a repair should cost.

We charge for the correct parts, skilled labor, travel, business expenses, and a reasonable profit.

We will not price a small reinforcement bracket like an entirely new garage door system. Even if we did go ahead and go to the customer’s house to help with this repair, it would not have cost them more than $200. That’s a pretty big difference from multiple thousands of dollars.

The First Google Result Is Not Automatically the Best Company

When someone has a broken garage door, they often grab their phone and search for garage door repair near me.

The first few companies displayed may be paid advertisements.

Google identifies paid search placements with labels such as Sponsored or Ad. These businesses may appear above the regular search results because they are participating in Google’s advertising program.

That placement does not mean Google has determined that the company offers the best workmanship, service, pricing, or customer experience. The company simply paid to be listed at the Top.

Organic search results are different. Google uses numerous systems and signals to determine which pages appear for a search. A company’s position can be influenced by relevance, website content, links, usefulness, reputation signals, location, and many other factors.

The company at the top may be an excellent choice.

It may also simply be the company spending the most money to get your attention.

Before choosing a garage door company, look beyond the first result.

Read recent reviews. Compare recommendations. Ask questions. Look at photographs of completed work. Find out whether the person answering the phone understands garage doors or is simply scheduling every caller for a sales appointment.

Most importantly, get a second opinion before approving an expensive replacement.

When Should You Get a Second Opinion?

Consider getting another opinion when:

• You are told that both the garage door and opener must be replaced.
• The technician recommends thousands of dollars in work after only a brief inspection.
• You are not shown exactly what failed.
• The explanation does not make sense.
• Repair options are dismissed without a clear reason.
• The estimate contains accessories or hardware you believed were already included.
• You feel pressured to approve the work immediately.

A second opinion does not mean the first technician is automatically wrong.

It simply gives you more information before making an expensive decision. The best way to determine what’s included when you buy something such as a new Liftmaster garage door opener is to simply look up on Liftmasters website the opener that you want to buy. What’s included in that box is the same stuff that is included when the garage door company gets it from their supplier.

Small Family Business Does Not Mean Small Knowledge
